EF 17-40mm f/4L USM vs EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM for general use
Jan 26, 2011

Dear all,

I am picking out a new kit for a trip to the Galapagos in May and am trying to select what lenses to bring along. I am thinking of purchasing either of these lenses to complement an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM (or should I get a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM plus Extender EF 2x III?). My question is (which may seem dumb) which lens should I pick, and if I pick the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM am I going to miss the 40-70mm zoom range? When I was really into photography years ago and took lots of pictures I seem to remember getting more use out of my wide angle than my zoom (I had a 22-40mm on a 35 mm film camera). I do anticipate doing a lot of wildlife photography on this trip though. Thank you very much for your thoughts!
