New compacts shooting 60i video? WHY?

I can't think of a single consumer device that can natively show interlaced video sold in the last 10 years. Why all of a sudden did someone think it was a good idea to bring interlaced capture back from the dead on these new compacts? AVCHD supports 1080p30, why not use it?

It doesn't make any sense in 2011 to capture interlaced only to have to de-interlace it at some point in the workflow. And if you don't do it right it ends up looking like crap.
