EEEK! Scratched front element!
Jan 23, 2011

I just noticed that my 24-105L lens has about a one inch long scratch on the front element almost dead centre and visible. Here is an iPhone snap of the scratch:

I have NO IDEA how it got there, the only thing I can think of is maybe I had a grain of sand or something on my cap (I was recently shooting on a beach) and it scratched it or something. No I don't use a UV filter (but probably will start now!) and I've always had the hood on when shooting.

So far I can't see any image degradation, but I haven't done a ton of testing yet. I expect I would notice flare at night from light sources?

  • What would you do?

  • Would you send it to Canon and get it fixed?

  • Have any of you ever?

  • How much does that cost?

  • Would you just leave it?

If I leave it I will ALWAYS know it's there and it will make me mental, not to mention if I ever decide to sell the lens it's a MAJOR drawback for a buyer.

I guess I am leaning towards (95% sure) sending it to Canon. I wonder how much that'll run me...
