Manual focus lenses on NEX-5

I recently picked up a Minolta 50mm f1.7 lens for $1 on eBay. It's all beat up, but it works. I didn't want to invest much in an MF lens without trying it. This was an easy cheap way to try it.

So, now I want to get a better lens. I noticed that there is a huge difference in the price between the 50mm f1.2 and the f1.4... Is the 1.2 THAT much better? Or is this just hype to have "the fastest"?

Also, does anybody have some tips on using manual focus lenses? I haven't used one since I was a kid, and it was MUCH easier through the viewfinder. I'm finding it quite tedious on the screen.
