I don't understand why someone who wants to ultimately process images in Photoshop would also use Lightroom.

I came from PS/ACR/Bridge. Hated the Bridge of 'then' (haven't seen it lately). Loved ACR, and I came a long way with PS over a 10 year period.

The two most popular DAM/converters alleviate a lot of the need for PS, for many. One is working with ACR+, in essence (or Mac's version of it [g]). When PS is needed, a round trip into it from either DAM is easy enough (and flexible enough if one wants to use a different editor or even converter, routinely or from time to time).

TIFF output is a side argument - one can choose PSD format or TIFF, or convert those PSDs or TIFFs afterwards (to lesser bits, or other file formats). Storage, as cheap as it is, shouldn't be either (unless one never culls their archives of the chaff).

It's just a different approach. A complete package for some, a front end for others. And for yet others, wholly unnecessary. And the world spins around and around. . .
