Moonshot

Seeing a nice moon tonight, I thought I would try to shoot it with my K5 and DA 55-300. Of course the lens is a bit short for the purpose, but with a bit of processing and cropping in ACDSee Pro 3, I came up with the following:
It was more tricky than I thought. I used a tripod of course as well as a remote in the mirror up setting. I had no luck with the programmed settings which all grossly over exposed the moon but I managed something passable using full manual mode and manual focusing. The white balance was even trickier. In automatic mode I got a very pale image using Jpegs. The images taken RAW were however much better. Any tips or advice appreciated on this subject so that I can do better next time!
