i find that the learning curve for the d7000 is a bit longer/steeper than my d40 and d90 before it and i'm still learning how to get the most out of the d7k

anyway, one thing i noticed early on is is to watch the ISO. i find that most pictures above iso1600 tend to be a bit soft and require more processing. sure, pics are useable up to 6400, but they will require a lot more work in PP to get the most out of them. maybe you can try a lower ISO, or ISOs comparable to what you used on your previous cameras and see what you get out of them.
