Concert Photography Questions.. need advice

Hi all. I was at a show this past weekend, and a friend asked that I photograph his band with his Nikon D300s (This was my second time using the camera... all my SLR bodies are Oly).
After alot of fiddling with A and S modes and the meter going nuts, I ended up setting a manual exposure at a stop(ish) below ambient and using his stofen'd sb600 with WB set to AUTO (flash) to bring out the foreground in terms of both color and exposure.
All in all, I had a great time, but would love to hear what people who have done this before would suggest in terms of settings, how/where to shoot, etc.
