Hard drive inaccessible

Yesterday my external hard drive was working fine. Today I can't access it.
Went to Control Panel under Disk Management and drive is listed but says that it is not initialized (was OK yesterday), so I went to properties and selected "Initialize". Dialog came back saying that sector missing (or similar wording) and can't perform the initialization.
What went wrong with the drive and how to get it back?
