Jupiter and its moons
Jan 9, 2011

Yesterday I visited some friends who have a house in the countryside and they're blessed with a wonderful sky and very moderate light pollution. After sunset I went out with my 550D and the 70-300mm f4/5.6 and tried to shoot some sky objects. With some luck, I got two good shots of Jupiter, one for the moons (1/5, f/8, ISO800) and one for the planet (1/200, f/8, ISO800). I mixed them together in Gimp and obtained the following picture:

The two images were taken several minutes apart so I think there's a little misalignment between the planet equatorial band and the satellite orbits, but nonetheless I am a bit surprised (and very happy) to get a planet with such "cheap" equipment. The picture here is a 1:1 crop with a 2x enlargement in the upper right corner. Visible moons are Ganimede, Europa and Io.
