D700+SB600 in commander mode not firing

Happy new year to everyone. My SB600 is not firing when I have it set on commander mode with my D700. The D700 flash is up and firing and the squiggly arrow screen on my SB600 is switched from off to on. Turning the flash to make sure the IR receiver is aiming at the on camera flash doesn't do it. Could someone go through the steps for setting this combination up for commander shooting? Maybe I'm missing something. I hope...
