I have had the same problem.

This quote is from a Nikon authorized service center in Florida:

"We have seen many cases of Nikon SB 900 flash firing on its own or misfiring when used on the Nikon D700 camera. This is due to several possible causes that are related to the metal flash foot on the Nikon SB 900 not making proper ground when used on the Nikon D700."

This seems to be the problem for me; not a loose hotshoe, not a thermal freak out.

They think that the D700 hotshoe leaches oil when the flash has been used a lot, say at a wedding. The oil then causes the electrical short to happen. I have cleaned the hotshoe and flash foot with Eclipse in the middle of a wedding when this happened, and it solved the problem long enough for me to finish the job.

My D700 is in for service - I'll see what happens.
