Not quite on your own... send the work to an independent shop. If the distributor wants to walk away from good money it's not exactly wise on their part but we can't stop them.

Nikon will and has worked on gray market lenses, but you never know if or when they will. I'm well aware the "official" policy states otherwise, but I've never had problems and I know others have the same experience. I think it depends on who receives it. That being said, for new lenses I always prefer the USA five year warranty, but with used or TCs gray market is a consideration. If Nikon won't work on them, then one of the authorized centers will, not a big issue either way...
