I have both the 17-85 and the 18-135.
I use them both each one on a 40D.
The two cameras are like unidentical twins in the backpack.

The 18-135 has a HALF STOP advantage at mid range zooms so I use this for low light and interior photojournalism. It has a longer reach to pull in detail.

The 17-85 is quiet and smaller. Nothing moves in the barrel when focusing. In the 18-135, I have to be carefull NOT to touch the front barrel while focusing.

IQ is generally the same. I say generally, meaning on average. There is a slight ding dong difference but not too serious to argue with.
Two great lenses, they are.
Both worthy to be owned.
If you have 2 cameras...
