I'm rather surprised that the camera would draw any power from the USB port - I would have thought that any power to operate the camera while connected to the PC would be supplied by the camera battery. I've certainly never seen this error with three different Nikon DSLR's (D70, D200, D300) or any compact (Canon and Lumix) connected to any PC.

Having said that, of the four USB ports on my Lenovo laptop, not all will supply full power to port-powered devices. I have three USB portable drives - one of them will only work correctly from one of the ports (drive won't spin up on the other three). The other drives don't care, and all the above cameras will work with any of the ports on the Lenovo.
