When you open the file, it should open in Camera Raw first. At the bottom of the ACR window (right under the filename) you'll see some blue links with photo info. Mine says:

ProPhoto RGB; 16 bit; 4288x2848 (12.2MP); 240 ppi

I suspect yours says 8 bit instead. If that's the case then yes you're losing some info. Click on any of those and a dialogue box will appear where you can change the defaults.
