Anyone shooting the eclipse tomorrow night?
Dec 20, 2010

It looks like the clouds come to my area in the evening, but cleardarksky.com indicates they stay away from my in-laws, about a 3 hour drive away, until just after the eclipse ends. In 2008 I chased the clouds up and down the FL coast, getting a few decent shots.

One lesson I learned was that the exposure needed to capture the fully eclipsed moon at ISO800, f/5.6 (400mm) resulted in a 1.3s exposure time, blurring the detail. ISO 100 is fine to keep exposures to a fraction of a second while the moon is being covered, but be sure to ramp up the ISO to keep exposure time short as the moon gets dark. I'm figuring I need to go all the way to 6400 to get a 1/6 shutter speed, which I hope will be enough to prevent blurring. I'll bracket up and down to be sure I cover all the bases.

I'll be trying both the 100-400/5.6 by itself and with a 1.4TC with the pins taped. The good thing about the moon is that it moves fairly slowly and will be in shadow for over an hour, giving plenty of experimentation time.

The timing details can be found at http://www.mreclipse.com/MrEclipse.html

Anyone else shooting? Suggestions, lessons from the past, etc.?

Any thoughts on using Hi ISO/long exposure NR? I'll be shooting a 7D, tripod, MLU, etc.
