DNG -- Why?
Dec 18, 2010

There have been several threads in which someone proposed conversion to DNG from (whatever format the original was produced in). Most recently http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&thread=37212098 .

I have not yet heard a good explanation of the advantages of DNG. So I thought maybe if I started a dedicated thread, someone would explain just why they like DNG above all other formats.

My NEF files work just fine in LR2/LR3. They work fine in NX. They work fine in PS. They work fine in GIMP/UFRAW. Those are currently the only programs I use. Why should I go the extra step and convert? I'm open to change if there's a good reason, but I haven't heard it yet.
