I cannot speak for other brands, but Nikon's top zooms are said to be as sharp as their top primes. Bulkier, slower, but the IQ is there.

I came (back) to Nikon from Canon, where I used primes 90 percent of the time. The lack of comparable primes bothered me until I actually used the Nikon zooms (24-70, 70-200 f2.8, 200-400). Previously, from my time as a newspaper photographer in the 60s and 70s on, I always used primes, so this was a bit of a revelation for me. I did, very briefly, compare the 14-140 mm to a Voitgländer 50 f0.95 on the GH1 and GH2. At least in this instance, the GH2 clearly resolved more than the GH1, and the Voitgländer was better than the zoom on both cameras. Of course it is (like the old days) a totally manual lens in every respect.
