Careful: The 50mm is a good lens, but it won't autofocus on the D5000.

yes, it's okay. I never use af, I prefer shooting manually.

So you also never use AF on your 18-55 kit lens? I suggest you do some tests first using by using Auto Focus, single point. If that (combined with the other advices) will give you better results then you know your manual focusing skills need further improving.

I thought that one couldn't MF with a 18-55 and a small viewfinder as the one in the D5000...

Even in my old film SLR days, with big viewfinders/prims (and with a bright lens as a 50f1.8) in good light it was hard for me to MF...

So, please, by all means, use AF.
