Tested:

H Rated 1 GB xD card
M Rated 2 GB xD card

Cameras:

Fujifilm FinePix E900 9.0 Megapixel (shooting at max. resolution in raw)
Fujifilm FinePix F31fd 6.3 Megapixel (shooting at max. resolution in .jpg)

In Camera Write Time Results:

E900 ~
H Rated 1 GB - 7 sec.
M Rated 2 GB - 13 sec.

F31fd ~
H Rated 1 GB - 3 sec.
M Rated 2 GB - 4 sec.

My guess is that a 1 GB M+ is just as "real world" fast as an H. 2 GB M+ cards can be bought for under $20. Whereas a REAL 2 GB H would still run over $50 with shipping (you won't find them in stores anymore).

I do keep an H Rated 1 GB in my "glove box cam" E900, because it's my "raw street shooter" and those 6 seconds definitely matter in that specific application. Although, if that card ever fails, I'm sure a 1 GB M+ would be almost as fast.

My plan is to patiently watch for price reductions on Olympus structured (just to have the stitch panorama option, should I ever need it) 1 GB (for pure speed) and 2 GB (for the extra space) higher end M+ xD cards... and buy about 8 or 9 of each... rather than pay inflated prices for H cards (thus being able to afford twice as many cards).

M+ cards will probably be around for another few years and I can see places having great sales on them already:
