Why do I need a wide angle lens if there's panorama?

Hi all,

I'm new to photography and I trying to decide whether to get both NEX kit lens or just the 18-55mm zoom. I was wondering why you would need a wide angle lens if the NEX has a panorama function? Don't they more or less accomplish the same - allowing you to capture more of a landscape scene? Thanks.
