D7000 + 16-85 f/3.5-5.6VR or 28-75 f/2.8

I'm going to get a D7000 in a month - yes, I've made up my mind despite the bickering - and I'm now deciding what lens to get. I shot a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 on my Sony A200, so I'm rather familiar with the lens, however, I've never owned a Nikon lens. Does anyone on here have the 16-85VR? If so, how does it compare to the Tamron in IQ, Focus speed, and overall build quality? I can get the D7000 for just over $1000, versus $1450 for the D300s, so the obvious choice is, well, obvious. I don't want the kit lens and instead I'd rather invest the $300 into a higher quality lens.

I'm also considering the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, but I think that's a better second lens to compliment this first lens.

If there are any other noteworthy options I'm not considering, please feel free to suggest them.
