EOS Utility

I have a Canon 7D. I use EOS Utility to download photos from cam to pc. When I connect the cam to the pc, EOS utility does not start automatically. I go to Preferances in Utility and the check box to click to have Utility start auomatically when the cam is connected is grayed out, I cannot check that box. Any ideas why?
