Is the FX 24/1.4G overkill for a DX body (D7000)?

Have the 35mm 1.8G but not wide enough on my D7000 but it seems that the 24/1.4G is the only choice available to obtain a focal length of around 35mm?

My question is whether the 24G overkill on a D7000? Or are there any cheaper alternatives? I am not keen on a Sigma as I have had bad experiences with them (on Canon bodies tho).
