Travel camera - SLR or pocket?

Hi,

will be travelling to Europe next year for 3 months and trying to decide which camera to take with me - Canon 450D (kits lens) or something like S95?

I like the idea of small camera so you look less like a tourist, also don't need camera bag etc,. but OTOH with SLR you can achieve better results (usually).

What are your opinions? How do you like to travel?

It's a pity S95 doesn't have longer zoom, would make my decision somewhat easier
