The only chance of a less-than-stellar one is one that's decentered.

Try shooting a scene that's near infinity across the frame wide open, and make sure the sharpness is symmetric (i.e. left side not softer than the right, etc.)

If it's decentered, exchange for a good one or send it in. My 16-50 was decentered, got serviced under warranty by Pantax and came back perfect ever since.

Hi There
Thank you everybody for your input - it really was helpful.

i spent a happy hour at warehouseexpress trying out different lenses, in the end I decided to get the 16-50, because:

1. it starts at 24mm equiv (really more important than the long end for me)
2. it's weathersealed (one of the main reasons I bought the body, right!)
3. it felt really nicely made and responsive.
4. it's f2.8

I hope I've got a good one, but at least they'll happily change it if I haven't

Pictures will follow!

thanks again.
