50 1.4 Lowlight Focusing
Nov 17, 2010

Hi all, I just received my much anticipated Canon 50mm 1.4 yesterday. I got it after sunset and took some test shots at home. At first I was sorely disappointed with the results as most pics in low light focusing (F2.0 and below with ISO 400) were not sharp.

After numerous efforts, I decided to have my wife go directly under a chandelier and focus on her shiny eyes. I shot at F2.0 ISO 400 with shutter speed of 1/80 and the focus was dead on.

Early this morning, I took more shots of her face by the window with the sunlight flushing in and again the focus was dead on.

So is it true that it only focuses really well with great light? In a dim room, it just won't do as great of a job with focusing. Is that normal?
