Help me to get a decent walkabout zoom for my K5
Nov 15, 2010

Hi there

Right - I have a K5, with the 35 macro and the kit zoom. I have a zeiss 50 f1.4 ZK on it's way from the States, and I'll probably go for the 100mm macro as well.

I really want a quality walkabout zoom which starts at 24mm or thereabouts.

I had a 16-50 DA* for a week in July to play with on a K7, and I wasn't impressed with the corner quality (this seems to be borne out in the photozone tests). This is the obvious lens to get, and I don't mind the price - but I don't want soft corners either (especially at this price).

Looking at photozone, the only Pentax zoom which seems to have decent corners is the 16-45 - which is, of course, a bargain as well.

I'd love to think that the 18-135 will be a stellar performer, but I just can't bring myself to believe in magic! (stellar performance from 7x zooms = magic)

Another alternative is the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which seems to have pretty good write ups (although I'd like a longer range).

Any brilliant suggestions?

all the best
