Broken screen on GXR and Ricoh repair policy/rates
Nov 12, 2010

The screen om my 11 months old GXR started to malfunction last week. The same thing happened on my gx100 a year ago, and was what made me switch from the gx100 to the gxr. This time however i thought I would get the camera fixed rather than change camera. I called Ricoh Sweden who said that screens were never fixed on warranty and that changeing the screen would cost around 300 EUR wich is pretty much in pair with what the camera costs (acctually maybe a bit moore).

I find this a bit strange. For what it is worth a new unit would also give me 12 months of moore warranty so albeit a bit disturbing it was a quite easy choise to make. Before throwing the old unit in the bin and buying a new one I thought I would give it a go repairing it. It took me a little less than 5 minuits to dismount the broken screen and find the replacement part online. Given the fact that I am not a camera repair specialist I would guess that the hole procedure would take a bit under 15 min for a Ricoh service tech. The price for the spare screen was 18 USD. This would make the hour rate for a ricoh repairman somewhere around 1000 EUR. I just dont find this reasonable at all.
