Is it really that bad?

Well my experience is from shooting stacked flower macros at longish shutter speeds with a 150 f2.8 Sigma. All the frames were soft and believe me the Sigma is sharp.

The connection is a single threaded connector and the camera is in practice cantilevered on the screw.

It is fairly flexible and not the most stable configuration, especially with a longish lens to exacerbate the problem.

I could / should have used the tripod collar on the lens which may likely have solved the problem.

A possible work around is to use mirror lock up, which I have successfully used with a 9 step HDR series at long (multi second) shutter speeds.

Recommended anyway for sharp captures, but I would personally like to avoid the problem altogether.

I wouldn't get a third party grip! They are unlikely to be better and apparently don't achieve the maximum possible frame rate? Perhaps somebody else has experience.
