Protecting camera and lenses in non photo specific backpack - what do you use?

I know quite a few people here prefer non camera equipment specific backpacks, especiallly when hiking.
How do you protect your photo equipment, whilst having it readily accessible?

My favourite backpack is an Osprey Atmos 35 - for me nothing beats it for comfort for day hikes, and it has the added benefit of half panel opening.

I have a 5D II and a 70-200 F/2.8 (plus one wide angle lens) and am trying to work out the best way to protect them.

One option I'm considering is getting an Op Tech D Series neoprene case ... not sure which one would be the right size, but probably the D-SLR Zoom. Has anyone seen or used one of these, and if so would it do the trick?

Another option is to cut up a foam sleeping pad, and try and glue together something that fits the bottom of the backpack.
Any other suggestions or recommendations anyone please?
