Benefits of taking AF-ON off of shutter release ?

I've had my 7d for a couple of weeks having come from a 400d/XTi. Very happy so far and am enjoying learning the camera with the help of the Magic Lantern guide. The massive improvement in high ISO performance is the thing that's most impressed me to date.

I have 1 newbie question.

I see that I can disable AF Start from the shutter release first pressure and assign it just to the AF-ON button instead. Many here and on other forums recomend doing this, but it's not obvious to me what benefit this brings. Please can someone explain what I might gain by doing this ?
