Is translucent mirror design fundamentally flawed?

Since picture quality ultimately is determined by the light that reaches the photo sensor, isn't it a fundamental issue that the translucent mirror takes some of that light away? By all accounts, the A55/A33 makes up for it with fancy electronics, but it's it fundamentally a design handicap i.e. electronics could do even better without the translucent mirror in the way?

I really like A33, but am now considering getting a cheaper body and spending more on a good lens.
