I like the d3100 which I can shoot even with 1 hand so light

Do not be fooled by the D3100 price tag. It has more than entry level specs. Any len you had can be used with the new camera.

If you are used to handling D40, you should be at home with D3100. Do not think you should upgrade to a more "pro" feel for the sake of it.
