Light gathering is the same, an f1.0/2.0 etc is the same on any camera. The dof issue is just that and related to the crop of the sensor, for GH1/2 in 43 mode its 2x crop but take note in 3:2 and 16:9 mode on these cams you go wider in FOV, at 16:9 ratio its like a 1.8x crop, so the 20mm is closer to a real 35mm lens than a 40mm lens. So to compare with FF

Nikon d90, 35mm, f1.8 is like a 52.5 FF and f2.7 on FF would get the same dof
Pana GH2, 20mm, f1.7, is like a 40mm FF and f3.4 on FF would get the same dof

As a bonus, shoot, 16:9 ratio on GH2 and get a 36mm lens horizontal FOV?

In fact you should try and shoot wider in low light to avoid camera shake too and 1/20 is very doable on the GH with the evf at the eye with no shake, but yor subjects may blur if they move.
