Where are all the reviews? They're coming!
Oct 27, 2010

As a follow up to the recent news story and consequent forum discussions I thought I'd clarify the current review situation on the key Photokina cameras. The office move was, as has been pointed out, terribly timed for this bunch of reviews, but the date was set long ago and has been carefully managed for minimal disruption: the studio was dismantled for packing at the last possible moment, and fully reassembled 10 days later in its new location, the day the first wave of staff arrived in the US.

Unfortunately, the cameras people are most interested in only arrived in reviewable form just before the move, and though we worked flat out to get all the studio work done, inevitably there have been delays since.

So, in summary:

• We now have a Canon 60D and the studio work is pretty much finished, and the review itself is well underway.

• We still haven't received a Nikon D7000 or D3100 from Nikon, though I'm assured they'll arrive today. We need the D7000 to finish the 60D review, so that's not helping.

• We have an Olympus E-5, and the review is progressing nicely

• We are about 75% through a 3-way test of the Canon S95, Nikon P7000 and Panasonic LX5.

• We did all the studio work on the Panasonic GH2, then were told it probably wasn't production quality, so we've had to scrap most of it: this delays that review and moves it down the queue.

• We have literally just received a reviewable Samsung NX100, which will go into the queue. There are others waiting (Pentax K-5 etc) but all these won't be started for a month.

It's important to remember that a dpreview full review takes a single reviewer at least 4 solid weeks (presuming everything goes smoothly), and we only have 3 camera reviewers (hopefully more soon). This means there's always going to be a backlog when a lot of important cameras arrive simultaneously, and the nature of our in-depth reviews means that for all the pressure from the community to get 'more reviews, faster', we can only go as fast as we can. We'd get complaints if the reviews started to get more superficial or less rigorous, just as we now get complaints if we don't get them done fast enough.
