Umm...you do need to put it into perspective. It's a kit lens. A cheap kit lens even then. And taking that into account, it's a decent lens. Not great but not bad either.

It's no where near as good as the other 50mm or 55mm lenses but then again, the others are really good lenses. If it was a bad lens the review score would reflect that. I got some great photos from it though it's now replaced by my Super Tak 55mm 1.8. Anyone should be able to get some good photos from it. Besides, being a bit soft wide open isn't the most unheard of problem.
