Can new 70-200mm f2.8IS II replace 400mm f5.6+2x.ext for birding?

I am considering trade my current 70-200mmf2.8IS and 400mm f5.6 for the new 70-200mm II+2x extender. Anyone compare the sharpness and the focus speed for birding/airshow? If it is as good, it will be more flexible to carry just 1 lens and handle different scenarios.
thanks
