You have to buy an etched screen for grid lines for the top

pro line Nikons.

After comparing my on-demand lines from the D200 and the etched screen that came on my used D2x, I'll have to say it is the best choice.

The etched screen isn't quite that much money ($30), and the etched screen is sharper, lines are thinner, and less distracting than on-demand lines.

So if you really need grid-lines, buy the etched e-screen and put it in. It is really simple. While I haven't seen the quality of grid-lines on the D300 or D700, I'm willing to bet the etched screen is superior. If it weren't, Nikon would add on-demand lines on the D3 line.

The on-demand lines are nice and convenient (you can turn them off), the etched screens are cleaner and crisper.

Give it a try:

I may get one for myself, as I like the lines on my D2x.
