Why Oly did an excellent job with the E5
Oct 20, 2010

Olympus says plainly that the E5 is an upgrade for existing e-system users. That means two things: It is not meant to compete externally and the sales volume is already determined to be very low.

That means the price has to be high to cover even relatively small amounts of R & D.

Overall, given all these constraints, Oly has done a stellar job with the E5.

If you wish to criticise, that look at why Oly is in this position in the first place.

Remember all the people criticising Oly three and four years ago saying if they keep doing what they are doing they will destroy 4/3rds because the R & D money will dry up? Remember all the fine Olympus defenders who attacked: how us amateurs could possibly know something other than the Oly execs was one of the things they said. Just a bunch of malcontents we were told.

These people said that Oly will do fine plowing its own way. (How they could say say this when the E3 is a Canon 1 series clone I don't know)

To these people I want to say: hope you're happy because then at least someone will be.

A few short years ago Oly was the number 3 camera manufactuerer in the world. This is what happens when a manufacturer listens to the wrong people.
