Lightroom 3 - backing up and moving stuff around question...

This is my situation right now:
I shoot, import to LR with a card reader, edit, and export files for use. Then, when my hard drive begins to fill up, I back things up to an external drive and delete what's on my hard drive.
Problem: When I back up my photos to the external drive, they don't retain the adjustments I made in lightroom (something I only discovered recently).
What do I need to do to make those adjustments stick and travel with the files?
