Especially since Sony's NEX5 new firmware will fix its glaring user interface weakness. And because the NEX5 will accept third party lenses - with manual focus, which should be really easy on the LCD and necessary anyway for quality portrait work.

If money is an issue, you may want to consider a used Sony R1 (comes with a superb Zeiss lens well worth over $1,000) for about $350, or a used Canon 5D full frame with the $300 Samyang 85mm F/1.4 which would put you on an equal footing with the best of the best. Using the Sony R1 would require you to shoot with strobes or a lot of light tho. The Samsung NX10/ NX100 is also a fantastic buy ... with great lenses available too.

I have penned a number of camera musings and keep them updated there if you wish to learn more http://www.flickr.com/photos/nycandre/4050967137/in/set-72157605888833527/
