60D Flash--Test early

A note for 60D photographers: Be sure to test the hot shoe on your camera very soon after you get it. The first 60D I had had a defective hot shoe. In the process of getting a replacement camera, the camera dealer found another 60D in stock that had the same problem.

To test: Mount a Speedlite on the hotshoe, and then remove the Speedlite. See if the pop-up flash will pop up in P, Tv, Av, or M shooting modes. If it doesn't, check the Shooting 1/Flash control/Built-in flash func. setting menu for a message saying that a Speedlite is attached (when the Speedlite is not attached).

The defect is in the little metal spring(s) on the inside of hot shoe not coming back up after the Speedlite is removed.

Better to find out sooner rather than later.
