Just a thought, but could DR be increased by manipulating the surface shape of the silicon surface that absorbs photons. I have read an article on Black Silicon, which seems quite interesting.

DR is influenced by S/N ratio and well depth of the pixel. I could be possible to increase the surface area of the silicon within a fixed pixel size by changing the shape of the surface via pyramid shaped pits or similar. The microlenses could be optimized for this. This would allow more photons to be gathered and recorded before saturation. This could also increase photon efficiency as less photons would be reflected. ISO 6, 12 and 50 may become viable and high ISO could also get a boost with the increased photon efficiency. Just my thoughs
