That's not necessarily true anymore. For instance the 50mm F/1.4 AF-S has the best, most even stopped down performance of all 50mms DPreview has tested.

And normal lenses are supposedly the easiest lens design to make. Nikon and Sony both have inexpensive 35mm f/1.8 lenses for their APS-C cameras. If Pentax hopes to compete why did they make their equivalent so much slower but the same price?

The sharpest most distortion free prime lenses often have a relatively moderate maximum aperture. A faster lens is only "better" if you actually need to use a lens at f/1.4 or f/1.8.
