Longer zoom vs better quality glass + crop
Sep 23, 2010

I've been using my Canon 28-300L zoom for quite a while now and have been very satisfied. I've been wondering about something though. The 28-300 is good, sharp and produces very nice results, but it's no 70-200 quality wise. It's a very handy lens to have, but I'm sure I could get better results with a 70-200 F4 IS for instance, and I'd get some money in between if I sold the 28-300.

Now, my real question is, how would the quality differ between a shot with the 28-300 at 300mm, and a shot with the 70-200 (F2.8 or 4 IS) at 200mm and cropped to match the 300mm shot. While comparing shots taken with the 28-300 and 70-200 the 70-200 shots are clearly more detailed. I'm using a Canon 5d Mark II.

Thanks!
