E-5 -- it's all about price
Sep 16, 2010

I checked Amazon and a new E-3 is going for $1,000 and a new E30 for $830 and a new e-p2 with viewfinder 2 and 17mm lens is going for $988.

I have a 410 which I "upgraded" to the 450. Discovered that I liked all the improvements in 450 over the 410 except for the 450's stronger AA filter. The 410 is a gem of a camera with its weak AA filter -- providing really nice sharp pictures, except of course for blown highlights from a "shorter" DR.

While I am very attracted to the e-p2 with its weaker AA filter and better DR, I do enough low light "sport" photography of my kid in gyms that an e-p2 really can't replace the 4xx's in those situations.

I have a "ton" of 43rd glass -- 8 lenses (9-18, 11-22, 14-54vI [came with E-1] 14-42, 25, 50, 40-150, and 50-200vI)-and am very happy with them and want to keep using them.

I'm ready to buy the E-5 -- it appears to address all of my concerns with the current lineup of 43rd bodies especially the weak AA filter and "promised" better DR. However, it is just too expensive. My expectation and price point is around $1,200 for an E-5 body. I just won't spend $1,700 for one.

Now, if all the speculation about Oly not developing 43rds and no new 43rd lenses is true, then they could bundle the 12-60SWD lens with an E-5 for $1,700 and I would seriously consider buying that kit at that price. the 12-60 is really needed for video and seems to be an extremely nice lenses to go with the E-5.

It just comes down to price. And, I suspect it is just a matter of time until the price does come down. The only question is will it come down enough to generate the sales Oly needs for a return on their investment in the E-5.
