Any opinions on the Pentax 645D?
Sep 10, 2010

I had been looking at medium-format digital for a while, wondering if I would ever in my life be able to justify the cost... thinking about a second hand Mamiya or even an Hasselblad with a digital back... when Pentax announced this 645D back in March 2010.

Wow, I thought... at around $9500, it's not enormously more expensive that a Canon or Nikon "prosumer" SLR with a 35mm-sized sensor.

But then, when I looked at the specs again, I noticed that the sensor on these so-called 645s are not 60mm x 45mm, but only 44mm x 33mm. Quite a difference in area. It should be called a 430, but I suppose Pentax gets away with calling it a 645 because it is compatible with existing 645 lenses from true 645 SLRs taking 120 or 220 film.

But how many Pentax enthusiasts have taken the plunge and lived with this camera for a few months?

What's it like in real, everyday use? How are the ergonomics? Can you use it easily in cold weather, while wearing gloves? What's it like to lug around all day?
