70-300L costs $1500 for a reason
Sep 3, 2010

I see a lot of people who insist that the 70-300L can't possibly justify its cost because the old version is allegedly so very, very good already. That always strikes me as a bit odd because almost all reviews I've read of the old 70-300 IS have universally panned its poor performance at 300mm.

The specs show that the 70-300 IS weighs only 630g, while the new L version weighs a whopping 1050g. But I guess some people can't fathom that all that extra glass is actually there for a reason.

And so to get a proper frame of reference, I have made a composite of Canon's own MTF charts for both lenses. The charts pretty much speak for themselves.

How to Read an MTF Chart:

Bold Lines = Contrast
Thin Lines = Resolving Power

Black Lines = Wide Open
Blue Lines = Stopped Down to f/8.0
